How am I like my kids?

N
o, I am not talking about physical resemblance but rather a spiritual one. My husband and I are always discussing the "heart" likeness we have with our children. Let me explain.

First heart issue. This child is often disciplined for whining/complaining for not wanting his/her hair fixed, teeth brushed, clothed or for being told to eat all of his/her food. If this child has to sit on the toilet any longer than the lost drop of potty comes out he/she becomes upset. This little one was snatched from death. Was abused, neglected and abandoned--not to mention the extreme skin rashes from wearing his/her soiled clothes all day. At first this little ones was so thankful for every little thing. He/she has forgotten where he/she came from.

How often do we as believers do the same? We fell in love with Jesus after He snatched us from the grips of death. We follow Him, obey Him and serve Him...but then we slowly begin to complain and forget where we came from.

Second heart issue. This child is not content. He/she wants to be served first at the table. If one child gets a "new" toy, he/she is not content unless he/she gets one too. This child is the happiest when everything is going his/her way. In this little ones life, it is all about "me."

Does that sound familiar? We are once content in our walk with God. His love is all we need. But then we become disillusioned and we expect Him to do more for us. It begins to become all about me.

Third heart issue. This spunky little ones pays lip service. When asked not do something I instantly hear, "yes mom!" but as soon as I turn my back, he/she is doing whatever he/she wants to do. He/she knows and loves to tell me what I want to hear but in his/her heart never intended to obey. It is more convenient for this child to keep doing what he/she had already purposed in his/heart to do.

'Oh, yes Lord, I will do WHATEVER you want me to do.' I will go to anywhere. I will sell all my possessions and give to the poor. But, when the Lord speaks to our hearts--we do not obey. It's just not convenient at the time.

I am always amazed at how the Lord speaks to me through the "sin that so easily entangles" the hearts of my children. Because I see my own sin in them. It is my desire to allow the Lord to continue pruning me and in turn pull the roots of sin up in the hearts of my children and plant the seeds of Christ in there place.

"I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord!"

Very good...the LORD does also use my children to show me my heart issues...and I'm glad because I do want to be more like him and die to me!

You are so right on! God has amazing ways of revealing ourselves to us - and I know that for me, it is often not a pretty picture. My prayer is that, when He shows me who I really am, it will make me more and more willing to die to self and let Him live through me.
