What about a Christian psychotherapist or counselor?

As we can see from the last post, psychotherapy has its foundation built upon self love, suppressed childhood memories, the occult and self-made religion.  All of which directly contradict the Word of God.

"What about Christian psychotherapy" some have asked?

"It is inexplicable that in face of the devastating evidence that psychotherapy is a pseudo-science riddled with contradictions, the great dream of most Christian psychologists is to integrate it with Christianity {Dave Hunt}."

Inexplicable indeed, in light of the fact that the Bible is more than clear that we are to separate ourselves from the world {and its practices}.

"Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers {and their ideas}.  For what fellowship does righteousness have with lawlessness?  And what communion has light with darkness?  And what agreement does the temple of God have with idols?  For you are the temple {your mind/body/soul} of the living God? Come out and be separate from them says the Lord."  2 Corinthians 6:15-17

These words Paul wrote over two thousand years ago to the church at Corinth--a church that was being led astray by false teachers--are true for us today as well.

And what about Christian counseling?

Counsel is good and God encourages us to seek it.  That is true.  Proverbs 11:14 says, "where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety."  However, who are we going to for the counsel and what methods are they using?

If you read through the book of Job you can see the devastating effects of unwise, unbiblical counsel.  In chapter 38, God asks Job, "Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge."  We would be wise to learn from Job's life in remembering that the wisdom {knowledge} of the world is foolishness to God {1 Corinthians 3:19}.

All Christian counseling should be founded upon and grounded
in the Word of God and His wisdom alone.

"You {God} will guide me in YOUR counsel."  Psalm 73:4

"We are not denying the value of professional counsel for those areas of daily function that are not covered in the Bible and do not find resolution solely through our relationship with God through Christ.  In seeking counsel, however, it should always be biblical to the extent that the Bible covers the situation. God's word offers the best counsel in every area of human behavior and human relationships {Dave Hunt}."

In Isaiah 30 and 31, we read an account where God rebuked the Israelites for "going down to Egypt" for counsel.  This is a rebuke we too would be wise to heed.

"Woe to the rebellious children says the Lord, who take counsel, but not of Me, who devise plans but not of My Spirit.  And who have not asked My advice, to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt.  Therefore, the strength of Pharaoh shall be your shame, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt shall be your humiliation {30:1-4}."

&

"Woe to those that go down to Egypt for help, and rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many, and horseman because they are very strong, but who do not look to the Holy One, nor seek the Lord!  Now the Egyptians are men and not God, and their horses are flesh and not spirit {31:1-2}."

The Lord longs to be your Mighty Counselor.

"The Mighty God, whose name is the Lord of Hosts.  You are great in counsel and mighty in work, for your eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men."  Jeremiah 32:19

It has been a blessing to read your posts Summer. I read Dave Hunts book many years when on my quest to understand these very same issues you shared. The Lord first opened my eyes while at University 20 years ago in the UK, when I was surrounded by psychologists. While ministering in England, my husband and I frequently came across Christian counselors in the Church who used psychology to "minister" to the flock. It was heart breaking to see. I agree that God has placed all His answers and all the counsel and help we need in His Book but I believe often times, these counselors chose psychology over God's word because they simply DO NOT KNOW HIS WORD and therefore should not really be allowed to be in that position. So many people we knew were hurt as a result and freedom only came when they fully surrendered themselves to the Lord, confessed all their sin and allowed Him to show them what was really in their hearts. Truth is; they all needed the TRUTH to set them free. Once a person began to meditate on scripture and then do it, many of their issues disappeared.

Blessings to you and your growing family!!
