When our children become idols

"Their land is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands." Isaiah 2:8

How many times have I trusted in my own sufficiency, "the work of my own hands," while raising these precious children. Pride turns them into little trophies. A display of my great and wonderful (gag) abilities. With each illness that the Lord has allowed to come upon me, I am reminded how easily I can turn my children into idols--striving to perfect their behavior, attitudes, etc.. I am placing my children before the Lord and that is idolatry!

"Our children are Gods (not mom's) workmanship."

It is so true how this can happen if we aren't careful. Thank you for this wonderful reminder to check my heart.

My kids are 18 and 20 and God has brought me to this exact same place so many times and I am so grateful! I always get a sense of relief that He is in control and I can better accept when they make wrong choices, knowing that he will use those to grow and teach them. They truly are His.

I have really enjoyed reading your blog! You recently left me a comment on a post titled "a challenge" and I would really love to ask you some questions about being a missionary in Africa. My husband has felt called to Africa for the past 14 years!!! There have been many things that have stood in the way, but I think the number one thing is ME. If you would be willing to answer a bunch of questions from someone who is pretty ignorant on all things missionary please email me at:

I know that you have been sick, so please do wait till you are better :-) We've been waiting 14 years so I think we can wait a bit longer :-) I do hope you are getting more energy back and feeling better.

Blessings,
Kerri
